According to official media reports, a throng gathered to commemorate the deceased commander Qasem Soleimani on the anniversary of his assassination in Iran on Wednesday, where two bombs were detonated in rapid succession, resulting in the death of at least 103 individuals.

The explosions, referred to as a “terrorist attack” by state media, occurred during a period of heightened tensions in the Middle East. This followed the assassination of Saleh al-Aruri, the second-in-command of Hamas and an ally of Iran, in a drone strike in a southern suburb of Beirut. Lebanese officials attributed the attack to Israel.

The explosions occurred in close proximity to the Saheb al-Zaman Mosque in Kerman, the southern birthplace and burial site of Soleimani. This event coincided with a gathering of fans who had assembled to commemorate the fourth anniversary of his assassination in a targeted US drone attack near Baghdad airport.

Rahman Jalali, the deputy governor of Kerman, described the blasts as a “terrorist attack”.

No party has promptly claimed responsibility for the attack.

The official IRNA news agency stated that the death toll has increased to 103, including those who died from injuries sustained during the terrorist bombings. This is an update from their previous claim of 73 deaths.
