Ayelabowo, a driver, was injured after driving a blazing tanker from Bovas filling station in Odo-Ota neighbourhood, along airport route, Ilọrin on Wednesday.
According to City & Crime, the fire broke out at 8 a.m. as PMS was being syphoned into the fueling station’s reservoir and took firefighters almost an hour to extinguish.
Speaking on the event, Hassan Adekunle, spokesman for the Kwara State Fire Service, said that the victim was transferred to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) after being referred from a local clinic.
Adekunle said, “After the fire started, the driver summoned the courage to jump into the tanker and drive it out to avoid a major disaster before we extinguished the inferno.” However, his legs, laps, and a portion of his face were charred in the process. “He’s writhing in pain,” Adekunle said.
He said that the fuel tanker with registration number AGG 728 XK was carrying 45,000 litres of PMS.
Adekunle informed our reporter that the driver’s bravery and the commitment of the fire team rescued surrounding houses from the raging fire.
