I’m raising my kids alone – Funke Akindele

Popular Nigerian actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has opened up about her struggles as a single mother, revealing that she is solely responsible for raising her children following her separation from her estranged husband, Abdulrasheed Bello, aka JJC Skillz.

The couple got married in 2016 and welcomed twins in 2018, but in June 2022, JJC Skillz publicly announced their separation, citing unresolved issues regarding child custody and joint business interests.

In a heartfelt interview with Chude Jideonwo, Funke disclosed the emotional toll of juggling single motherhood with the pressures of fame, politics, and personal loss.

“I have children I’m raising alone,” she said, highlighting the absence of support from JJC Skillz. She also reflected on the difficult period following the death of her mother and her loss in the 2023 elections, admitting that she experienced depression and emotional breakdown during that time.

“My heart was aching. I lost my mum, my marriage fell apart, I lost in politics, I have to get back to work, I have to earn a living… and you are stressing me,” she said tearfully. “For the first time, I cried. I broke down for weeks.”
