Rukayya Abubakar, a housewife, has been sentenced to life in prison by a Kano State High Court, presided over by Justice Halima Sulaiman, at Miller Road, Bompai, for the murder of her stepchild.
Barrister Rabia Saad, the prosecution’s attorney, told the court that Rukayya killed her stepchild by throwing him down a well at some point in 2021.
Saad claimed that the accused had violated Penal Code Section 221 by committing the act.
Throughout the trial, Barrister Rilwan Muhammad, the defence attorney, implored the court to balance justice and mercy, pointing out that the guilty woman is a mother with numerous children to support. The prosecution called four witnesses.
In a similar vein, Shamsiyya Ashiru Gabasawa, another housewife, has been charged with the murder of her stepchild.
She was charged with killing her stepchild in front of a Kano State High Court.
Barrister Lamido Sorondinki, the prosecution’s attorney, told the court that the defendant killed her stepchild, infant boy Naziru Ashiru, by poisoning him.
Sorondinki claims that the offence violates Penal Code Section 221.
Barrister Samir Rabiu, the defendant’s defence attorney, requested bail on her behalf after the defendant refuted the accusation.
The defendant was remanded to the detention centre by Judge Zuwaira Yusuf, who also postponed the case until March 5 to allow for additional discussion.
