A 22-year-old man was burned to death in the Achoho village of Gwer East LGA, Benue State, after reportedly raping and murdering his brother’s wife.
The young guy, just known as Botswar, reportedly murdered his brother’s wife on Friday, but an enraged crowd apprehended him on Monday and burned him fire.
Witnesses said that the dead Botswar went to the property on Friday with his brother’s wife and did not return home until a search team found the woman’s lifeless corpse, which showed evidence of being raped and matchet wounds on her head and nose.
According to witnesses, Botswar was eventually tracked to Tse-Agberagba, the headquarters of Konshisha LGA, where his mother had relocated into a second marriage, but he was not discovered.
But luck was claimed to have run out on him when an angry crowd that had been searching for him caught up with him in Agidi village on their way back from his mother’s house and pounced on him in the style of jungle justice.
They said that the late man confessed to raping and murdering his brother’s wife before being set fire by the mob, and that both victims belonged to the Ayisa family.
SP Catherine Anene, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), did not return phone calls or messages seeking to confirm the occurrence.
Anene has previously cautioned against such jungle justice, stating that anybody caught in the act would face the law.
