The incident occurred while the president was attending a funeral, where he was reportedly stabbed.

Authorities arrested the attacker, identified as a young gendarme who joined the force in 2022.

President Assoumani, 65, has a long history in Comoros’ political scene, having first come to power in a military coup in 1999.

His re-election in January 2024 was marked by controversy and protests that led to fatalities.
