The Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 competition winner, Chidimma Adetshina, has shared details of her recent experience in South Africa.
Remember how the 23-year-old law student controversially withdrew from Miss South Africa 2024 due to xenophobic outrage over her nationality? Well, she came to Nigeria after agreeing to compete in the competition.
She was raised in Soweto after being born to a Mozambican mother and a Nigerian father.
Adetshina claimed in an interview with Silverbird TV that South Africans rejected her due to her name.
“It all started because of my name,” the woman stated. The fact that I am representing South Africa under the name Chidimma has not gone over well with some.
Because of my name, some South Africans felt that I wasn’t truly South African. It was an extremely terrible experience that I wouldn’t wish on anyone, and it was quite depressing to witness.

It breaks my heart to realise that, despite my 23 years of residence, I wasn’t made to feel at home. A few things that transpired in the background caused me to pull back. The fact that I had to pull out so close to the end was devastating, but I had to make a choice, and it was shared on social media.
However, I am aware that I was born and raised in South Africa. I continue to be proud to be Nigerian.
