The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has reassured Nigerians and the organized labour force of a forthcoming improved minimum wage as negotiations continue.
Previously, the governors rejected the Federal Government’s proposal of N62,000, citing that some states would need to borrow to meet salary payments.
Meanwhile, organized labour remains steadfast in their demand for a N250,000 minimum wage.
An emergency meeting was convened by the governors following the Federal Executive Council’s decision to postpone discussions on the minimum wage to allow President Bola Tinubu more time for comprehensive consultations.
In a communiqué released after the emergency meeting that extended into the early hours of Thursday, NGF acting Director of Media, Ahmed Salihu, outlined the various issues discussed, including the national minimum wage. The communiqué emphasized that the governors are committed to ongoing engagement with stakeholders to achieve a mutually agreeable solution.
“The Forum discussed the new national minimum wage and agreed to continue engaging with key stakeholders to reach a mutually acceptable solution. We remain dedicated to the process and assure that better wages will result from the ongoing negotiations,” the communiqué stated.
