The Sultan of Sokoto and head of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, has officially announced that Friday, June 7, 2024, marks the beginning of Dhu al-Hijjah 1445 AH.
The National Moon Sighting Committee, led by its secretary, Malam Yahaya Muhammad Boyi, issued a statement on Thursday night.
Malam Boyi said that the Sultan of Sokoto has officially designated Friday, June 7, 2024 as the commencement of Zul-Hijjah 1445 AH.
Therefore, Sunday, June 16, 2024 will coincide with the observance of Eidul Adha in the Islamic calendar, namely in the year 1445 AH.
On Tuesday, the Sultan instructed Muslims to observe the new moon of Dhu al-Hijjah 1445 AH after sunset on Thursday. This directive was given by Prof Salisu Shehu, the deputy secretary-general of the council, in a statement.
According to Daily Trust, the Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia declared Friday, June 7, as the beginning of Dhu al-Hijjah after observing the new crescent throughout the Kingdom on Thursday night.
The Saudi Arabia Supreme Court stated that Arafat Day would be on Saturday, June 15, and the first day of Eid Al Adha will be on Sunday, June 16.
Friday, June 7 has been designated as the beginning of the Hajj pilgrimage season this year, since it marks the first day of Dhu al-Hijjah. It is anticipated that around three million Muslim devotees would participate in the 2024 Hajj.
