The Nigerian Military has intensified efforts to combat banditry in the northwestern region, a zone plagued by violent attacks from organized militias often referred to as “bandits.”

These criminal groups have been terrorizing states such as Zamfara, Kaduna, and Katsina, with roots of the conflict dating back to 2011, following disputes between Hausa farmers and Fulani herders.

In response to the growing threat, security agencies have ramped up operations, targeting bandit strongholds through both ground and air strikes.

The Nigerian Army recently achieved a major victory by eliminating Kachalla Halilu Sububu, a notorious bandit leader and arms supplier.

Sububu controlled a vast mining site in the Anka area and maintained a significant presence in the Sububu Forest, where he owned a large number of cattle.

Over time, several other bandit leaders have been neutralized, contributing to the ongoing efforts to restore peace in the region. These leaders include:

1. Halilu Sububu – Controlled a mining site and had vast cattle resources in the Sububu Forest.

2. Buhari Alhaji Halidu (Buharin Yadi)– Terrorized areas in Kidandan/Galadimawa, Sabon Birni, and parts of Niger and Zamfara states.

3. Dangote – Killed in a gunfight in the Dumbunrun Forest, between Batsari and Jibia in Katsina State.

4. Boderi Isyaku – Involved in the kidnapping of 39 students and the attack on the Nigerian Defence Academy in 2021.

5. Kachalla Dan Chaki – A notorious bandit leader.

6. Dogo Gudali – Responsible for various criminal activities.

7. Dogo Rabe – Killed in an Air Force strike between Zurmi and Birnin Magaji in Zamfara.

8. Alhaji Auta and Kachalla Ruga –  Eliminated in a raid at Gusami Forest and Tsamre village in Zamfara State.

9. Rufai Maikaji – Commanded over a hundred fighters.

10. Ya’u – Killed in an ambush in Burra, Ningi, after terrorizing local communities.

11. Alhaji Karki – A former repentant bandit who returned to crime, killed while attempting to overrun a military unit in Niger State.
