In a recent interview with *Rolling Stone*, Nigerian Afrobeats star Rema addressed the controversy surrounding his claim to be among Afrobeats’ greatest artists, insisting that his confidence should not be confused with arrogance.
Rema explained that his self-assurance comes from years of hard work and dedication, and he questioned why people take issue with him acknowledging his own success. He emphasized that confidence should be viewed positively, not negatively.
He also reflected on his previous statement in the song Heis, explaining that while he spoke confidently, it wasn’t out of cockiness. “What stops you from saying you’re the best?” he said. “It’s even humble to say four.”
The 24-year-old singer also referenced Kendrick Lamar’s diss track, clarifying that, unlike Lamar’s approach, he wasn’t trying to diminish others in the industry. Instead, he advocates for unity within Afrobeats, saying, “I didn’t pull down the two, I didn’t pull down the three. I just see myself as one of the greats.”
