LG Autonomy: Governors break silence after losing suit to FG

The Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and Governor of Kwara, AbdulRazaq AbdulRahman, has revealed that state governors are pleased with the Supreme Court’s ruling granting fiscal autonomy to local government areas.

Speaking to State House correspondents on Friday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Governor AbdulRahman remarked that the judgment has alleviated a burden from the governors, and they are satisfied with the power devolution to the local governments.

In response to inquiries about the Supreme Court’s decision, the NGF leader stated: “We welcome the ruling of the Supreme Court. Compliance is mandatory, and our Attorney Generals have requested the enrollment order, which we will review carefully.

“Overall, governors are content with the devolution of power concerning local government autonomy. This decision alleviates the burden on governors.

“People are often unaware of the extent to which states financially support local governments, which is a significant issue.”

The Kwara governor mentioned that the NGF has sought the enrollment of the judgment and plans to review it in their meeting next Wednesday to determine the next steps.

“The forum will convene next Wednesday to thoroughly examine the issue and come to a resolution.”

“Currently, we have not yet seen the court order enrollment, so we are uncertain of its contents,” he added.
