Andrew Wynne, a British national also known as Mr. Povey, has refuted claims by the Nigerian government accusing him of plotting to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Wynne, who operates a bookshop at the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) headquarters in Abuja, was recently targeted by the government in a raid.
The government alleged that Wynne supported #EndBadGovernance protests with the intent to destabilize Nigeria.
However, Wynne denounced these claims as a form of governmental repression.
He criticized the authorities for their response to the protests, which he claims resulted in the deaths of over 40 individuals, thousands of arrests, and ongoing detentions.
Wynne’s statement denounced the government’s approach as a severe overreach and called for the release of detainees.
He noted that many people involved in the protests are facing harsh accusations and legal challenges without substantial evidence.
The detained individuals, according to Wynne, include both well-known and lesser-known figures from various parts of Nigeria who are now facing severe charges.
The statement read in part: “PROTEST IS NOT TREASON – release all the detainees! The mass protests over #EndBadGovernance and #EndHunger frightened the government. But rather than addressing the peoples’ demands, the government turned to repression.

“Perhaps 40 people were murdered by the police and other security forces, thousands were arrested and many still remain in captivity. In Abuja, the authorities have attacked the so-called leaders and organisers of the protests. Ten people face ridiculous charges including treason, mutiny and levying war against the state.”

Unfortunately, we Nigerians are too easily cowed. The illegal and repressive arrest by the bad. government of Nigeria ought to spark up more protests, but people seem to have become so afraid to do so. We should have allowed the criminals in government arrest all well-meaning Nigerians so that the world can see the evil they do to ruin Nigeria.
