Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja has directed the detention of several individuals involved in the #EndBadGovernance protests at the Kuje Correctional Center, pending a decision on their bail application scheduled for September 11, 2024.
The court action follows the protesters’ not guilty pleas to a six-count indictment that includes terrorism charges leveled by the Federal Government.
The court’s decision came after the protesters’ legal representatives requested bail, a motion opposed by Simon Lough, SAN, representing the prosecution. Lough highlighted that some charges carry the possibility of capital punishment.
Justice Nwite rejected the defense’s request for police custody and decreed that the defendants be held at the Kuje Correctional Center, with the female defendants being transferred to the Keffi Correctional Center in Nasarawa State. The adjourned date for the bail hearing is September 11.
The charges, filed on August 30, 2024, and signed by DCP Simon Lough, SAN, include accusations of treason, destabilization, and other serious offenses.

The indictment, which names British citizen Andrew Wynne (also known as Andrew Povich) among the defendants, alleges that the protesters conspired to undermine national stability and commit treason between July 1 and August 4, 2024.
