Retired Brigadier General Buba Marwa, the Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has emphasized that drug abuse is a significant factor contributing to insecurity in Nigeria.

Marwa made these statements during a sensitization and advocacy program for women and youths in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) held in Abuja.

The program, organized in collaboration with Dr. Aminu Gusau under the WADA platform, aimed to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse, particularly among women and youths.

Representing Marwa at the event was Dr. Ngozi Madubuike, Director of Drug Demand Reduction at NDLEA.

Marwa expressed concern over the increasing involvement of women and youths in drug abuse, noting that it has become a serious issue across Nigeria, affecting people from various demographics, including young individuals, females, and those residing in rural areas.

He highlighted that addressing the problem of drug abuse among youths requires a collective effort from parents, schools, the public, and the youths themselves.

Marwa stressed the importance of empowering youths to make positive contributions to society, emphasizing that they are the driving force behind societal development.

Marwa underscored the link between drug abuse and criminal activities, including armed robbery, murder, kidnapping, and banditry, as well as other social issues like burglary and sex work.

He urged youths to reject drug abuse, emphasizing its detrimental effects on health and future prospects.

“Kidnapping, banditry, rape, armed robbery among others are some of the negative consequences of this menace,

“It is derailing the peace, progress and development of our teaming youth and by extension the nation”.

Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara commended the organizers for addressing such an important topic, especially considering the current insecurity challenges facing the nation.

Dr. Aminu Gusau, co-organizer of the program, reiterated the destructive impact of drug abuse on individuals, families, and communities, stressing the need for collective efforts to combat this menace.
