The Federal Government has announced that only candidates aged 18 and above will be admitted in the 2024/2025 academic year.
This was stated by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, during his welcome address at the 2024 Policy Meeting on Admissions into Tertiary Institutions/NELFUND Half Hour Briefing on Thursday.
The announcement met with loud murmurs from the audience. Prof. Mamman addressed the discontent, noting that the decision is lawful and urging those dissatisfied to seek amendments through the National Assembly.
“If you want the child to start from four, you can go back to the National Assembly and amend it,” he stated.
The session, held by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Abuja, became rowdy as stakeholders opposed the new minimum admission age.
Prof. Mamman’s declaration faced immediate resistance from the stakeholders present, leading to disruptions during his speech.

Despite the uproar, the minister attempted to explain the reasoning behind the new age requirement.
It took the intervention of JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, to restore order, pleading, “Please attention please!”
The annual policy meeting is convened to authorize the commencement of admissions into tertiary institutions and set certain admission benchmarks.
