The Federal Government has begun the sale of 30,000 metric tonnes of milled rice to Nigerians at a subsidized price of ₦40,000 per 50kg bag.

To qualify for this offer, buyers must have a National Identification Number (NIN).

The initiative, which is aimed at alleviating the current food crisis, was announced during a flag-off ceremony where the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, represented President Bola Tinubu.

The rice will be sold on a “one person, one bag” basis, with verification measures in place to ensure fair distribution.

A government task force will oversee the process, requiring buyers to provide their NIN and phone numbers to prevent individuals from purchasing more than one bag.

Civil servants can access the rice by using their Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) details at designated sales points.

To complete a purchase, buyers will receive a code and a treasury receipt, which will then allow them to collect their rice at designated collection centers.

This effort is expected to stabilize rice prices and possibly reduce the cost of other food items as well.

In a previous announcement, the government had planned a similar rice distribution in July but suspended it without explanation.

This current intervention is part of broader efforts to address food security challenges across the country.
