Governor Alex Otti has begun the payment of a substantial N17.6 billion in salary arrears owed to employees of tertiary institutions.
This payment, which began this past weekend, has brought considerable relief and celebration among the staff.
A notable scene from Abia Polytechnic Aba showed jubilant staff expressing their gratitude towards Governor Otti for fulfilling his pledge to resolve the outstanding payments.
The Governor’s office announced that a monthly sum of N1.5 billion will be disbursed over the next year to address the debt.
The payment plan, detailed by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, aims to distribute the arrears across twelve months to ensure financial stability and ongoing governance functions.
The initial batch has already been allocated to the relevant institutions.
The Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, criticized former officials who had accrued the debt but now criticize the current administration’s efforts to rectify the situation.

He highlighted the Governor’s satisfaction with the positive response from Abia workers compared to the negative reactions from those who mismanaged the funds.
