More schools shut down in Nigeria over protests

In anticipation of the nationwide protests, the Yobe State Government has decided to close all primary and secondary schools in the state.

This announcement was made by the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education in a memo signed by the Director of Schools Management, Bukar M. Modu.

The closures will begin on July 31, 2024, two days earlier than the planned end of the academic session on August 2.

The decision aims to ensure the safety of students amid the anticipated protests. Schools are set to resume on September 15, 2024.

Similarly, the Katsina State Government has ordered the immediate closure of all schools, effective Wednesday, July 31, 2024.

This directive, announced by Sani Danjuma-Suleiman, spokesman for the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, applies to all public, private, and community schools in the state. Parents are advised to collect their children, particularly those in boarding schools, and ensure their safety during the holidays.

Recall that the Osun State government mandated the closure of all schools, both public and private, effective July 31. This measure is in response to the anticipated #EndBadGovernance protests, which are demanding economic reforms and improved welfare policies under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership.
