In Nasarawa State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have struck a peace pact ahead of the Supreme Court’s decision on the hotly contested March 18, 2023 governorship election.
The Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing today on the PDP’s appeal against the Court of Appeal’s decision to overturn the Elections Petition Tribunal’s dismissal of Governor Abdullahi Sule.
Remember that the tribunal fired Governor Sule and declared David Ombugadu, the PDP’s candidate, as the legitimately elected governor.
The governorship issue has heightened tensions in the state, with several protests organised by various parties to express their displeasure with the tribunal’s and appeal court’s judgements.
In order to prevent a breakdown in law and order once the Supreme Court rules on the case, the Nasarawa State police command organised the signing of a peace deal with stakeholders from both parties in the state.
The APC was represented at the ceremony by the party’s State Chairman, Aliyu Bello, and secretary, Yarus Dakusa, while the PDP was represented by Adamu Bako, the Organising Secretary, Yahaya Bunu, Stella Oboshi, the Woman Leader, and Isa Sule.
On Monday, during the signing of the peace pact in Lafia, the state capital, the Commissioner of Police, Umar Shehu Nadada, cautioned that the command would not hesitate to deal forcefully with anyone who attempted to disrupt the peace before, during, or after the verdict.
“The purpose of this meeting is to ensure peace before, during, and after the Supreme Court decision.” The party leaders are also expected to bring this peace agreement to all their supporters and loyalists across the state’s 13 local government areas.
“The joint security committee has also resolved to work together towards ensuring a sustainable peace in the state. “Information at the command’s disposal shows that some faceless individuals are planning a violent protest in the state. As a result, “whoever goes against this peace agreement, no matter how well connected in society, will be sorry,” the police chief said.
He promised both APC and PDP representatives present at the meeting that the joint security forces would remain neutral in their operations.
According to the Daily Trust, the peace deal was signed in the presence of other state security agencies.
