Human Rights activist Omoyele Sowore has voiced strong criticism of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, as he approaches his retirement.
In a tweet, Sowore highlighted that IG Egbetokun is set to proceed on terminal leave on Thursday, August 1, 2024, after 35 years of service in the Nigeria Police Force (@PoliceNG).
Sowore’s tweet stated, “The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, should be proceeding on terminal leave on Thursday, August 1st 2024. Having completed his service in the @PoliceNG after 35 years of (um) meritorious service. While in the police force, IG Egbetokun ran one of the most ethnically-laden police hierarchies, and he now plans with @officialABAT to become the Nigerian ‘Paul Biya’ of the @PoliceNG.”

Sowore expressed concerns over Egbetokun’s future plans and the impact on the police force’s leadership structure, suggesting that no other individual would be able to rise to the position of Police IG in the next four years.
He criticized this as unfair and called for the @PoliceNG to understand the necessity of the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria movement.
He concluded his tweet with a pointed remark, “Nigerians would have nothing to do with IG Egbetokun after July 31st 2024. We wish him a deserved retirement life. #EgbetokunMustGo #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria #DaysOfRage.”
