President Bola Tinubu has reportedly decided to release Nnamdi Kanu, the embattled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), in response to widespread public demands.
This development was shared by Isaac Fayose, the younger brother of former Ekiti State governor Ayodele Fayose, through his verified Instagram account. Isaac Fayose expressed gratitude to President Tinubu, stating,
“Good news!!! Nnamdi Kanu coming out anytime from now. Thank you President Tinubu for listening to your children.”
Ayodele Fayose had previously urged President Tinubu to release Kanu, suggesting that it would not only help reduce insecurity in the Southeast but also potentially increase support for Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
Fayose argued that Kanu’s release could lower crime rates in the Southeast by 50% and suggested that Tinubu could gain more votes by showing goodwill towards the region.
Fayose also drew a parallel with former President Goodluck Jonathan’s approach to peace in the Niger Delta, where contracts were given to leaders like Tompolo.
He suggested a similar strategy could be applied in the Southeast to achieve stability and reduce security expenditures.
In his Instagram post, Fayose emphasized that releasing Kanu could change perceptions in the Southeast, potentially garnering more support for President Tinubu.
This call comes amid appeals from the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and other Nigerians for Kanu’s release.
