Erisco Tomato paste reviewer, Chioma Egodi has suffered the miscarriage of her unborn twins in prison.
A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja had ordered that Chioma Egodi be remanded in prison following a defamation case brought against her by the police.
Justice Peter Lifu on Tuesday, May 28 remanded Egodi after she pleaded not guilty to the two-count charges brought under the Cybercrime Act of 2015.
The judge fixed Friday for ruling on her bail application filed by her lawyer, Inibehe Effiong.
Effiong had tendered a medical report while contending that his client had suffered a miscarriage as a result of the psychological trauma of the case.
However, the prosecution counsel, Abdulrashid Sidi, asked the court to refuse the bail application because, going by the history of the case, she would likely jump bail.
The prosecution informed the court that the defendant had failed to honour the terms of her initial administrative bail and would not comply if given a fresh one.
Unable to deliver the ruling on the spot, the judge shifted it to Friday while the main hearing would commence on June 13.
Following the rulling of the federal high court, fresh discoveries of the miscarriage of Chioma’s pregnancy at the course of the case permeated the social media, evoking emotions from her supporters.
Effiong wrote:
“I can confirm that Chioma Okoli suffered a miscarriage and lost her pregnancy. I made this disclosure to the Honourable Court during yesterday’s proceedings and it was reported by pressmen who were in the court.
“Prior to yesterday, we decided to keep this information private and to only disclose it in the court. I am only stating this here due to the fact that the Court is already aware of it and many people are asking for confirmation.
“The evidence of the miscarriage is before the Court, is not for the media.
“I can also confirm that she was arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja yesterday on a two count-charge of alleged “cyberstalking” to which she pleaded not guilty.
“Chioma was remanded in Suleja Custodial Centre (Suleja prison) pending ruling on her bail application fixed for Friday, May 31, 2024.
“Please those asking me questions about her case and her current condition should understand that there is a limit to what I can publicly say at this time.
History will vindicate the just”.
