University unions such as the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have announced their intention to shut down campuses starting Thursday.
This decision comes after a two-week strike notice expired without resolution.
The unions are protesting over four months of unpaid salaries and 13 months of back pay owed to workers at Abia State University.
In a briefing held in Abuja, SSANU highlighted several issues, including the non-payment of the N35,000 wage award for three to six months in many institutions.
They also criticized the Federal Government for delays in implementing a new national minimum wage.
Additionally, the unions expressed concerns about the lack of educated individuals on the boards of Federal tertiary institutions and the proliferation of poorly funded State Universities.
They also called for urgent solutions to the nation’s security challenges, particularly in light of the recent killing of a Deputy Vice Chancellor at Uthman Dan Fodio University in Sokoto.
Also, academic lecturers, under the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), are considering a strike due to similar grievances against the federal government.
