A tragic boat accident in Gummi town, Zamfara State on Saturday, resulted in the feared death of 41 individuals.
The incident occurred as the boat, carrying 53 farmers heading to their fields early in the morning, capsized.
According to reports from a local resident, Abubakar Muhammad, only 12 people, including the boat’s captain, survived.
The remaining 41 were recovered from the water.
Gummi Local Government Sole Administrator, Alhaji Na’Allah Musa, confirmed that the boat was overloaded despite the captain’s attempts to offload passengers.
The boat eventually overturned, sinking under the weight. Four passengers managed to swim to safety, while the rest were rescued by recovery teams.
The Emir of Gummi, Justice Lawal Hassan (rtd), expressed deep condolences on the Gummi Emirate’s Facebook page.

He described the incident as devastating and offered prayers for the deceased and their families, asking for strength to cope with the immense loss.
