The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a stern warning to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding the timing of the results announcement for the September 21 governorship election in Edo State.
The party has expressed strong opposition to any results being announced at midnight and has pledged to safeguard their votes at all costs.
During the PDP’s grand finale campaign in Edo, Acting National Chairman Illiya Damagum addressed supporters, stressing the party’s vigilance to prevent a repeat of the controversial midnight results announcement seen in the 2023 presidential election.
Damagum emphasized that the PDP is prepared to protect their votes fiercely, describing the upcoming election as a crucial test for Nigeria’s democracy.
The call for vigilance comes amid past controversies, including the late-night declaration of Bola Tinubu as the winner of the 2023 presidential election by INEC.
The PDP’s National Campaign Council Chairman and Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, also urged Edo voters to support governorship candidate Dr. Asue Ighodalo and to resist any attempts at electoral manipulation.

Ighodalo, who is committed to continuing the work of the outgoing Governor Godwin Obaseki, and former presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar both encouraged voters to actively protect and escort their votes to ensure a fair outcome and secure a PDP victory.
