In an effort to lower fuel expenses and offer Nigerians a more affordable alternative to petrol and diesel, President Bola Tinubu has introduced Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) at N230 per litre for vehicles.

This initiative aims to ease the financial burden caused by the removal of fuel subsidies, offering a cleaner and cheaper fuel option compared to petrol, which now costs over N900 per litre.

The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi) was launched as part of the government’s strategy to diversify energy sources.

The move is expected to bring immediate benefits to Nigerians, particularly those in the transport sector, by significantly reducing fuel costs.

As part of the initiative, the president has directed the distribution of one million free CNG conversion kits to commercial vehicles involved in transporting people and goods.

These kits, which will be installed free of charge, will help drivers convert their vehicles to run on CNG.

The rollout will take place over the next 18 months, starting with 10,000 kits this week.

The distribution of the kits will be done in collaboration with national transport associations like the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Uber, and Moove, ensuring that commercial drivers across the country have access to the kits.

This initiative is supported by PCNGi, in partnership with NIPCO Gas, which will oversee the conversion process through a network of authorized centres.

The government aims to distribute all one million conversion kits by the end of 2025, allowing Nigeria’s transport sector to fully embrace CNG and reduce dependence on expensive petrol and diesel.

The introduction of CNG is part of President Tinubu’s broader vision to create a more resilient economy and promote sustainable energy practices in Nigeria.
