Suspected hoodlums attacked and vandalised the campaign car of Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, yesterday in Ekpoma, Esan West local government of the state, according to the Coordinator of the campaign organisation, Otoide Isesele Abas.
Abas told Daily Trust that the incident occurred after a meeting in Illeh Ward 10, where he had campaigned support for the deputy governor to be elected as the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) flagbearer in the state’s governorship election on September 21.
“We made a quick stop at the local market square after the meeting to buy some beef barbecue (suya) on our way to Ekpoma to meet other PDP members, and it was there that we heard that some hoodlums in a bus came to the Illeh venue of the meeting and destroyed the canopy while shooting sporadically.”
“We were still at the suya joint when the said white vehicle stopped by our campaign vehicle, and the hoodlums came down firing shots and destroyed the vehicle,” he told reporters.
Otoide stated that they all rushed for safety and reported the incident to the Ekpoma police division, and that the police went to grab the truck and return it to their station.
SP Chidi Nwabuzor, spokesman for the Edo State Police Command, had yet to react to inquiries as of the time of reporting this article. He had requested that our reporter call him back, but repeated calls were not returned.
