The Lagos State government has mandated the demolition of unauthorized structures on the Gbagada Wetland, located across from TREM in Kosofe Local Government Area.
This area is being converted into Maverick Estate by an unnamed developer.
On Friday, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab, accompanied by senior officials, inspected various drainage projects within Ikeja and Gbagada.
During this visit, Wahab highlighted that constructing on wetlands poses significant risks, including potential crises and disasters.
Consequently, he instructed that the site be sealed and issued a 24-hour notice for the removal of the illegal structures.
Wahab emphasized that any further construction requires proper documentation, including wetland clearance, drainage certificates, and Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA).
He expressed concern over the environmental abuse, noting that wetlands play a crucial role in managing stormwater and must not be obstructed.
Despite the government’s strict stance, Wahab affirmed that no construction on wetlands would be approved, underscoring the importance of adhering to environmental regulations.
