Ramat Joke, a housewife, petitioned an Area Court in Centre-Igboro, Ilorin, on Tuesday for a divorce, claiming that her husband, Habeeb Atanda, was a drug addict.

Joke stated in her divorce suit that she was unaware of Atanda’s drug use prior to their marriage.

“I discovered that he was hooked on drugs and a smoker after we got married.”All of my attempts to persuade him to change failed. His parents couldn’t keep him from smoking.

“My spouse takes from me to finance his lifestyle. “He does not provide for me,” she explained.

Responding, Atanda denied stealing from his wife.

He admitted that he was addicted to smokes.

Atanda said that his wife’s nagging caused him to lose his job.

He granted her divorce request.

The presiding Judge, AbdulQadir Umar, stated that marriage should be based on mutual understanding and be fruitful.

“In a situation where there are problems, divorce should be allowed,” he stated.

Umar consequently annulled the marriage between the two parties and ordered that the petitioner observe the three-month Iddah period as prescribed in Islam before remarrying. (NAN)
