Senator Magnus Abe, who ran as the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate in the previous general elections, has just defected from the SDP and rejoined his former party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Abe, who defected from the APC to run for the 2023 governorship race with the SDP, has announced his return to his former party in order to contribute to its advancement.
During his speech to APC leaders in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, Abe expressed his decision to rejoin his former party. He stated that he wanted to join individuals who share similar ideologies in order to construct a progressive APC in Rivers State. Additionally, the caretaker committee of the party in the state, led by Tony Okocha, expressed their willingness to welcome Abe back to the party.
“We are all individuals with strong personalities, including myself, Amaechi, Wike, and Okocha. None of us can be easily defeated. However, if we unite, there should be no other power in Rivers State that can prevent us from achieving our goals.”
I am of the opinion that if we can identify shared interests, as we have all done in the APC, there is certainly room for everyone. “As a founding member of this party, I am one of the individuals who have made significant sacrifices to establish the APC in Rivers State. It is undeniable that I possess the right to be recognised within the party,” he asserted.
Meanwhile, Tony Okocha, the Chairman of the APC Caretaker Committee in the state, stated that the party, under his leadership, will readily embrace Abe’s return.
Okocha, who addressed journalists in Port Harcourt on Wednesday following the distribution of food supplies to an orphanage and a home for the aged, emphasised that the strength of a political party lies not in any one person, but in the shared interests of its members.
