South Africa’s Foreign Affairs Minister Ronald Lamola has clarified that the recent controversy involving Chidimma Adetshina, a Miss South Africa contestant with Nigerian heritage, does not affect the nation’s diplomatic relations with Nigeria.
Lamola emphasized that South Africa’s relationship with Nigeria remains robust and continues to strengthen.
The issue arose when Adetshina, who was born in South Africa to a Nigerian father, withdrew from the Miss South Africa competition.

An investigation suggested that her Mozambican mother might have improperly secured South African residency, leading to a significant reaction from Nigerians and other Africans, particularly after a Caucasian contestant won the pageant.
The controversy has fueled discussions between Nigerians and South Africans on social media.
However, Lamola noted that the dispute regarding Adetshina’s eligibility was strictly related to the pageant’s regulations and should not be seen as reflecting on the broader diplomatic ties between the two countries.
