Suspended Zamfara lawmakers seek Tinubu’s intervention

Suspended members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have urged President Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly to wade into the crisis bedevilling the legislative chamber.

At a press briefing organised by the suspended legislators in Zaria, Bashir Aliyu Gumi, representing Gumi 1, also called on the United States and British embassies as well as the ECOWAS “to save democracy from danger.”

Recall that Gumi was announced as pro-tempo speaker last week after some lawmakers said the speaker of the house, Bilyaminu Moriki, had been impeached.

But the house during plenary on Monday announced the suspension of Gumi alongside seven other lawmakers for alleged contempt of the house, conspiracy, conducting an illegal sitting, mischief, and misconduct.

Gumi, who was flanked by 11 legislators (including those not affected by the suspension) during the press conference, said their aim was devoid of any political lining but an attempt to save democracy and the security situation bedevilling the state.

Also speaking, Nasir Mukhtar, the member representing Kauran Namoda North, who was not among the suspended lawmakers, said the recent development has taken a bad toll and may truncate the enrichment of democracy in the state.
