Bill Gates, Co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, has revealed why Nigeria receives the largest portion of the foundation’s intervention funds in Africa.
During the 2024 NutriVision Dialogue in Abuja, Gates highlighted that while the foundation invests significantly across Asia, Nigeria, with its substantial population and pressing needs, receives the most support on the continent.
He pointed out that despite progress, such as reductions in child mortality rates, more work is needed.
Gates emphasized the foundation’s focus on reducing global health disparities and tackling diseases like measles, malaria, and polio.
Future funding will increasingly target primary healthcare to maximize impact. In addition to health, the foundation is investing in agriculture to enhance productivity and reduce food costs by providing climate-resistant seeds, fertilizers, and better weather forecasts for farmers.
The foundation also supports food fortification programs to improve nutritional quality and address malnutrition.
Gates believes leveraging innovative approaches in both health and agriculture is crucial for further reducing malnutrition.
